She served for many years as Chair of Corporate Documents Committee and Nomination Committee for Make A Wish National. She was appointed by Make A Wish National to a special committee working with Make A Wish International on corporate structuring. She is a founding member of Hats from the Heart of North Georgia which originated in Chattanooga. Hats from the Heart places soft hats in infusion centers at no cost for cancer patients. In 2002 she became a founding member and Executive Director of the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund. The MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund awards college scholarships to students whose families have been impacted by breast cancer along with promoting breast cancer awareness. To date this foundation has awarded 650+ scholarships to students whose families have been impacted by breast cancer. One of her proudest achievements as Executive Director if the MaryEllen Locher Scholarship Fund has been the formation of MEL’s Club. MEL’s Club is a program that goes into schools and teaches breast health, self-examination, and debunks myths about breast cancer and its causes. In 2013 she joined with Kim Chapman Whitfield to form the Miracle League of Chattanooga to build a sports complex for the special needs community. She currently serves on the Miracle League Board of Directors as Secretary. In 2022 Jan created a new adaptive sports program to start in the Spring of 2023. This new Super Skills Triathlon will teach children and adults with skills in multiple sports. Each athletic will participate in their three top skills during the triathlon. She was awarded the Tennessee D.A.R. Citizenship award for 2017 and was selected as a 2017 Chattanooga Woman of Distinction.
